Plunkett Art Gallery got a colorful makeover on May 14 during Roberts Academy’s surprise art show.
What began as an ordinary field trip to Mercer’s art and graphic design department turned into a moment of awe and celebration for the Academy’s 37 students when students arrived at the gallery to find something unexpected: a professionally curated art show featuring their work.
The surprise student art show, thoughtfully coordinated by Roberts Academy art teacher Penni Hartley, highlighted the students’ incredible creativity and artistic growth.
From bold pop art pieces—including Andy Warhol-inspired portraits of Head of School Joy Wood—to whimsical ceramic sculptures, the gallery offered a joyful snapshot of the students’ work throughout the school year.
“This moment was about honoring their creativity and showing them how much their work matters,” said Mrs. Hartley. “They walked in expecting to observe someone else’s art and instead they were celebrated as artists. Watching their reactions was unforgettable.”
The show also featured ceramic pieces created during a special workshop led by Mercer University Assistant Professor of Art Mary O’Malley. Earlier this year, 4th and 5th-grade students had the opportunity to learn from O’Malley, and the clay creations they formed during that workshop were prominently displayed.
“I’m incredibly grateful to Mary O’Malley for sharing her talent and time with our students,” said Hartley. “She inspired them to see ceramics in a new light, and the pieces they created with her guidance helped make the show feel special.”
Joy Wood, Head of School at Roberts Academy, was both surprised and honored to be featured in the pop art series–an unexpected tribute from her students.
“It was such a joyful experience to see how our students view the world—and me—through their art,” Wood said with a laugh. “Penni has created something truly magical. On behalf of our entire school, I want to thank her for the love, thought, and creativity she pours into her teaching. This show was a beautiful reminder of what’s possible when students are empowered to express themselves.”
The surprise art show was not only a celebration of artistic achievement but also a moment of pride, reflection, and joy for the Roberts Academy community. As students, faculty, and families admired the gallery walls, the message was clear: creativity thrives where students are supported, challenged, and seen.
